Answer#2: Creosote out of Clothes. I was looking up information because my Husband made a mess of a pair of pants with creosote. I ended up using "Greased Lightening" sprayed it on and let it sit a while, the black marks literally disappeared, I was thrilled and thought in case you never found a solution or need one next time , I'd let you know!.  Q: Grass Stain. I need help on grass stain. My son slid in the grass with his Kaki pants. I've washed 3 times in cold water, each time applying "Spray N Wash" before laundering. The green is almost gone, but seems to be replaced by a brownish color. What can I do? Sue Hoskin -- "Jay/Sue"  Reply (Ref:0008)

A: Grass Stain: Try Cascade or similar dry dishwasher soap. When my sons played sports I learned this and it worked every time. I even use it on my bathtub. It seems to have lost is sparkle or that clear coating that makes it easy to clean. When I use Cascade it gets cleaner and in 1/2 the time. Also Lave hand soap work well too. On grout in the tub and clothing stains but rinse it out so it doesn't lighten clothing. Good luck!  Chris -- 25 Mar 2004

Q: Silly putty  We have silly putty on light color berber carpet, it is right in a door way, so I hate to experiment & maybe leave a bigger stain. It had been there quite some time before we discovered it--that may make it harder to come up??  Thanks. Please don't use my e-address on the web. Thanks again. -- J Hammond -- Reply ((Ref:0452)

A: We are not absolutely sure what will work but you could try applying ice or dry ice and breaking up the material ( the common solution for chewing gum) You would probably have to do it PDQ or the bits will soften and fall back in to the carpet. You could also experiment with cooking oil, white spirit or WD40 -- Fiona McIlroy  Please let us know if it works

Answer#2: In regard to removing the silly putty from my carpet - I tried the ice cube - nothing happened. I have some GOO GONE , it says not to apply directly to carpet, so I placed some on a cloth & blotted the silly putty -- I worked! Took a little effort but can't tell where it was! Thanks for your help anyway -- J. Hammond

Answer#3: Silly Putty  Put wd 40 on it let it sit for 10 minutes then using rubbing alcohol blot it until it is gone  -- Jensue

Answer#4: Silly Putty. I had silly putty all over my sheets bedding, son's pj's. I used GOOF OFF, similar to GOO GONE. IT WORKED!!!!! -- Nyeatesdds 1/11/08

Q: Never Seize Stain My husband recently got a product called "Never Seize" on one of his shirts whilst changing the tires over... Is there any way to get the stain out? Thanks in advance for any help! -- Anna Guazzelli CA USA Reply   (Ref:0647)

Q: "Stwizler" My child vomited on our light blue carpet after eating a "Stwizler" that was all red. Please help with any suggestions. I tried "Resolve" carpet cleaner immediately but there is still a large stain. Thank you! -- The Benenati Household -- Reply  (Ref:0710)

A: We did a search for that odd word Stwizler on the internet but no success. The food dye must be a common one so it should be relatively easy to find a stain remover that does the trick. We are still asking around for you. If you can find out the name of the product a search on the web might get a response from the manufacturer of the candy -- www.qznaz.com

A: Red Candy Stain. I think your problem is that the candy is spelled: TWIZZLER—no S. Good luck -- 'gurowitz' . Dec 15 2006

Answer Stwizler. I have had considerable success with Borax to take stains out of carpet. First dampen the area with warm vinegar in water (just a dash in a icecream dish half full of water). Then sprinkle the powdered borax over the area quite liberally. (I make a point of bying Borax that looks like talc in texture as there is also one which looks like dry fibeglass type slivers and I don't like that one). Leave the mix to dry and the stain just comes to the surface of the borax powder. Quite magic. Vacuum when dry. JM

A: Twizzler Carpet Stain. Try "Awesome" from the 99 cent store. Use it full strength. It is very mild and very little odor. My grand-daughter got red lipstick on my bar stools and I sprayed 'Awesome' on it and used a damp cloth. Never knew the stain even existed. Good luck. -- Fran Abbott 4/07/08

A: Red Carpet Stain. Buy Spot Shot carpet stain removal, usually available at Walmart stores. This has removed red Kool-aid stains from our carpet. Test on another area of carpet that may not be as noticeable to test for any color change to carpet before using on the stain. Good luck. -- Michelle DiCarlo' Apr 28 2006

Rust

Q: Rust stains in white cotton: What will remove rust from white cotton material? -- Lorrie Nold -- Reply  (Ref:0712)

A: Rust stains in white cotton: To remove the stain, rub with lemon juice and salt. Leave it several hours. It's even more effective when placed in the sun. Wash as normal. - - Patti Seizetheday

In Australia we have a product called Rustiban available at pharmacies only. It's a tiny plastic bottle with liquid in it of which one only needs a drop or two onto the cloth which has been moistened with water. Rust spots disappear while you watch. I t works wonderfully. Only on white cotton as far as I know. Don't get it on your fingers or skin as it is corrosive -- Maroof  Comment

I believe that there is also a stain Devil available for rust on fabric.  Oxalic acid is sometimes suggested in old books on stain removal, however it is poisonous and should only be used with caution. -- www.qznaz.com

A: Stain Devils  Hi, I notice in the how to remove stains section, someone recommended "Stain Devil" and implied that it was not readily available, except in the UK. If you ask your search engine to find "Westons", they are a pharmaceutical supply company that advertise on the web, and have "Stain Devils" for all manner of stains. P.J.Morant. --  17 Jan 2003

Q: Rust Stains: Off -White Berber Carpet  I have recently noticed that quite a few rust stains have appeared on my Berber carpet from the legs of furniture. The metal nail under the leg must  have been in contact with water or dampness ... I have a great steam cleaner  which gets out nearly all stains, but has been ineffective with the rust.  Anyone have any ideas? Thank you. -- Les Jane Cameron Reply (Ref:0620)

A: Rust Stains : Go to your local grocery or wal-mart and purchase a bottle of "Whink". It is a copper colored bottle with white lettering. This is my Miracle stuff for all rust stains on any material. You just squirt the whink directly on the stain, and the rust spot dissapears instantly. If it doesn't, it isn't rust. I even use it on the kitchen counters when a rust stain forms from a metal can being placed for a time with moisture under it. Hope this helps. -- dbschoe October 1 2006

Q: Jacket Stains I have a favorite jacket which I like to wear quite regularly. Q: Scorch marks on fabrics My iron has residue on it (dark matter) and when I went to iron a shirt it got on the shirt. I have tried several things to get it off the fabric. Do you know what could get it off the shirt? Something good for scorch marks on fabrics would be good. Thank you. -- NANCY THOMAS Reply  (Ref:0716)

Q: I don't know about the shirt but in Australia we have a product called Hi speed, Hot Iron Clean. It's a small tube with a light brown "toothpaste" consistency brown stuff. Put some on a clean cloth a run the hot iron over it. You may have to repeat it. Works well. JM Reply

Sorry, no perfect answer to this one, but someone out there has a good idea. Please help! Regarding your iron, a contributor (Simon Thorne) suggested cleaning toasters (which had burned on bread wrappers adhering to them) with acetone or nail varnish remover, perhaps it would work on the residue on your iron (when it has cooled down). Acetone can be used on almost all fabrics except acetates. -- www.qznaz.com.

Q: Age stains I have a cross-stitched quilt, almost 31 years old, and a Baptismal gown, same age. Both have yellow stains. I have tried Wisk and dishwasher detergent (Cascade) to no avail. I am pretty sure both items are cotton or cotton blends as I have washed them repeatedly with no ill effects. Any help greatly appreciated...for my first grandchild. Thank you. -- Jo Freer Reply   (Ref:0716)

A: I have heard a mixture of fresh lemon juice and salt rubbed on spots and placed in sun will bleach out yellow in old stains. This information from my wise Aunt Sue. I would try it first on just one small area and see how it does. -- Good Luck, Patti Seizetheday

A: Age Stains. Hi Jo. Has anyone suggested yet for yellowing cotton/cotton blends, to use any type of powder bleach, especially one for nappies is great! I have 100% cotton sheets & they tend to yellow over the winter sitting in the cupboard & this is what I soak them in (nothing else) in hot water, then rinse, to whiten them again for summer use. Ball Pen Stains

Q: Ball point pen marks A few asked how to remove ball point pen from wood. WD-40, hair spray or if all else fails try nail polish remover. I had to resort to the nail polish remover to clean up a chair my daughter marked up with a pen. I removed most, but not all of the marks. Areas where the pen gouged deeply it lightened up, but some marks remained. Looks a lot better though!! Test in an area that isn't too visible first to be sure it will not harm the finish and clean it off with a damp sponge once done.  Hope this helps someone. Tom  --  Tom Iwanejko Reply  4 Jan 2003

Answer#1: Ball Point Pen Removal
Try using aerosol hair spray applied directly to the stain. ( I usually isolate the stain with an old cloth) spray it, leave it overnite and launder as normal. Good Luck! The cheaper the hairspray the better.

Answer#3: Removing Ball Point Pen from Plastic Toys. Dear John, My daughter had a very expensive baby doll once that she scribbled all over in ball point pen. Nothing worked but after many phone calls to the manufacturer, one very kind employee rang me back with this tip. I didn’t actually believe that it would work, but it did in fact completely remove the ball point pen from the doll. What you need is “Oxy 10” pimple cream (I live in Australia so I don’t know what the equivalent outside Australia would be – some kind of 10 X strength pimple cream from the pharmacy I guess). You then rub this cream all over the toy/doll and let it dry. Then coat it again in the cream and put it out in the sun. The pen should just vanish. As I said, it worked for me but you might want to try a small area first.  I also used it when my daughter scribbled all over the plastic cover of a school book and it worked as well. Best of luck. -- Karen   01/11/2 005

Q: Stains on leather I have a question about my leather couch and chair which is a fairly light tan color. Mildew

Q: Mildew stains  I have a shower stall that is sealed with silicone rather than ordinary grout. Mildew has left black stains on the silicone that simply refuse to come out. I have scrubbed, tried bleach and any number of cleaning products that claim to remove mildew stains but nothing helps. I am now considering covering them up with liquid white out solution used to cover typing errors. Is there any other way to get rid of or cover up the problem? Thanks, -- B. Cerise Reply  (Ref:0141)

A: I have the same problem. The stains were all the through. Had to replace it all -- J Asher

A: The cheap sealants will deteriorate and become mouldy. Only buy the proper silicone product. A bit more expensive but if you are going to use it on baths, sinks and showers then the extra cost is well woth it. -- Hannah Afrasaibi

Tomato Stain

Q: Tomato based stain I am looking for a way to remove tomato-based stains - i.e. spaghetti sauce from my plastic containers -- Katharine Butler" Reply (Ref:0692)

Q: Tomato Based Stain - How do you remove stains from plastic containers used to reheat foods (like tomato sauce) in the microwave? These stains are permanent. Nothing will remove them, as they are now part of the plastic, which has been modified on a molecular level. This change is caused by the high temperatures experienced in isolated areas on the perimeters of containers used to heat or re-heat food in a microwave oven. The worst part is not the tomato sauce becoming part of the container, but the plastic container becoming part of the food! There are ongoing studies on the effects of chemicals that mimic oestrogen, which are found in most plastic packaging and plastic containers. Researchers are currently trying to draw the link between this, increased in infertility in men, and increased breast cancer in women, caused by these xenoestrogens. Yikes! Not to fear monger, but it might be best to err on the side of caution by toss ing those plastic containers and only use glass or ceramic dishes in the microwave. -- James Sayer

Answer#2: Yellow Stain. I can't tell you how to get rid of existing yellow but I can tell you how not to get yellow again on new items...I believe in cheap and environmentally safe...go buy a box of Borax...it is a powder and costs about 3 dollars...put a sprinkle of that in every load of light colored laundry along with whatever laundry soap you use and you shouldn't have anymore problems with yellowing...One more of many other uses for borax is it will shine you bathroom porcelain right up and great for cleaning toilets, plus many other things....It will save you money and cut your cleaning products in half. Good luck. -- CHRIS and Angie FORD Jan 25 2006

Answer#2: Body Odor Smells  I have found that to remove body odor from the armpits of my husband's long sleeve running shirts and Under Armor winter athletic wear, I pre-soak the armpits in vinegar before washing normally. Doesn't seem to discolor them, and they do smell much better!  Loved your site! Great ideas. J Marcum --    28 Aug 2005
