Answer: Skunk Smell If you're trying to remove the skunk smell from your dog...try bathing him in tomato juice...works like a charm. -- Valerie Press August 10, 2004
Answer: Skunk Smell. They say to remove the smell of skunk from a dog or cat is not tomato juice. My cat got skunked and I called my Vet he said the best thing is dishwashing soap. The spray from the skunk is an oil based spray and the best thing is dish washing soap, dish washing soap has a special agent in it to get rid of grease from you pots and pans and plates, well it works the same way with the oil from the skink. I tried the tomato juices as she got sprayed early in the morning I then tried the baby wash bath soap and finally got hold of my Veterinarian and he told me about the dishwashing soap and that most certainly worked - hope this helped. -- 'Dave and Jan Bigg' 31/12/07
Answer: Skunked. Hi, I have had dogs my whole life. Use 1 quart *hydrogen peroxide*, 1/4 C. baking soda, and a little dawn dish detergent. Wipe the skunk oil off first with newspaper, but since you have already given your pup a bath. Wet him/her first, mix all together in a bucket, pour over dog, rub in and let set on dog for a while. Then shampoo with more dawn. Also if your dog ever gets sprayed in the face, rinse eyes and mouth with cool water to stop the burning. Also watch for vomit in the first 15 minutes. If this happens get your dog to the vet. -- nancy potucek. 01/09/09
Caution - Mixing cleaning products can be dangerous also if you use Hydrogen Peroxide on animals or humans it should be diluted and carefully rinsed off afterwards. -- Webmaster

Question: Removing the Smell of Moth Balls Hi, How do you remove the smell of moth balls from fabrics, furniture, carpet and walls? Thanks so much for your help. mydorman@bellsouth.net 26/07/2005
Answer Mothballs Smell: The smell is what protects the clothes from the larvae of the moths and other insects. You can buy odorless moth balls however. By the way never kill spiders, if you make your house unfriendly to spiders then insects will multiply and ruin clothes, books and so many of your possessions. Mothball smells will eventually go of their own accord.-- McGlitchie

I was reading about those smelly hands and all you have to do to get the onion smell off after you get through cutting is use a drop or two of dishwashing liquid and a little salt and rub for just a bit and rinse. Also if you are cutting an onion and bell pepper, cut the onion first then the bell pepper and rub your hands just a little with the pepper and no need to do anything the pepper does the trick. For shrimp smell use a little lemon juice and a little salt and rub and rinse. -- D2 Kelly 22 Dec 2002 (by courtesy of www.hints-n-tips.com)
Answer#7: Smelly hands. I keep the lemons and limes that have been squeezed beside the sink, the main use is to rub on my hands after processing fish or any other foods. You can also use them to cut the limescale around taps and plugholes. -- Rachel Dee 22 July 2003
Question: Cedar Chest I have a beautiful cedar chest that I inherited. Unfortunately the previous owner put moth balls in it. I can not get out the smell. I have sanded the cedar, washed with vinegar, put baking soda in it and aired it out. Are there any other suggestions? Thank you, -- Heather Heather.nspBegley@uhn.on.ca (Ref:0051)Answer: Cedar Chest. Are you sure it's mothballs you're smelling? Cedar and camphor chests have a similar smell. Those woods were used to make chests because of their insecticidal properties, which is why the wood is usually unfinished on the inside. If you really hated the smell, you could varnish or seal the inside of the chest, but it sort of defeats the whole purpose of the chest! -- Gwynneth Jones vetchnospam@bignsppond.com Jan 2 2006
Answer: Cedar Chest Odor. Dear Heather, Just saw your post, don't know how old it is or if you have worked it out yet, but try old crumpled up newspapers. The ink will absorb most odors. Try it for about 24 hours and see if that works. It will take out mold odors and musty smells. May work on cedar. Good luck. -- Mary . Aug 30 2007

Question: Urine Smell Dear old Dad has reached an age and state of mind where everywhere is a fitting place to pee except the toilet. He is particularly fond of carpeting. How can I remove the urine, or least the odor, from carpeting and other absorbing materials? Daveintopanga@cs.com (Ref:0598)
Answer ref 0598: This is the same response as to #002 for the blood-a product called "A Clear Choice" is a miracle when it comes to removing urine smell-and stains-from carpet and clothes, or furniture fabric. It is non-toxic and odor free so there's no worries about leftover chemical smells and toxic fumes indoors. You can mix directly into a carpet machine with water and it'll work miracles. You can also spray directly onto smaller areas with no scrubbing and rub with your finger to activate, then blot with cloth and the stain (and smell) is gone. Also spray on stains on clothes, rub with fingers, wash as usual, and no more stains! It is sold in the supermarket on the cleaning supply aisle, but if not you can contact them for more info at www.aclearchoice.com . It also comes with a 100% money back guarantee if it doesn't live up to your expectations. Not too many products or tips can take away the smell of urine in carpet and fabrics, let alone keep it away, but this works. Even old stains and smell. Tara W. tntnspba@xmission.com 18th April 2004
Question: Smelly Musical Instrument Case My son recently purchased a used musical instrument which is in great shape, but the case smells of mildew. The interior of the case is thickly padded. Is there any way I can safely deodorize it? Thanks so much! -- fscott@home.com (Ref:0110)
Answer Ref: (0110) Musty Instrument cases: Damp Rid is wonderful for removing must. Damp Rid is designed to be used in the container it comes in, but this may be too big for the instrument case--you may have to improvise. Once you've shut the Damp Rid in the case, you should probably leave it there undisturbed for several weeks. If you open the case to take a peek to see how it's working, you will allow the case to fill back up with humid air & the Damp Rid will have to pull all of that new moisture out of the air. Be careful not to bump the case--as the Damp Rid absorbs moisture out of the air, it dissolves, leaving an orange liquid in the container -- Jeanne

Question: Clothes Burned in House Fire I am trying to salvage clothes that have been burned in a house fire. There are actual singe marks on the clothes but other than that they are fine (especially blue jeans and khakis). I have washed them with detergent and white vinegar to remove the odor but I don't know what to do about the burn marks on the clothes. Any suggestions? "Edgerton, Pat" PEdgerton@Hazelden.org
Answer: Clothes Burned in House Fire Just saw this post on the site, so I'm not sure if this is timely or not. To get smoke smell out (or skunk smell,) I have found that the only thing that works is taking clothes, etc to a dry cleaner that has an "ozone room." They do not dry clean the clothes -- they put them in a room with these hydrocarbons (or fluorocarbons, not sure which it is) and it removes the smell. This is the only thing that worked for me when a skunk got in the basement of a rental home & sprayed. lmnspz@speaknspeasy.net 17 Feb 2004

Question: Wedding Dress I recently purchased a wedding gown for my daughters wedding in October of 2001. I must store in my home until it is time for the alterations, which is 3 months prior to the wedding. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the dress, bead work and lace from yellowing? The dress is made of 100% polyester. Also, there are smokers in the house, and how do we prevent any smoke odors from absorbing into the gown? Thank you, Devittph@aol.com (Ref:0026)
Answer: Smoking and Wedding Dresses : Do you have a place that is pretty airtight or away from the house? Wrap the dress to airtightness w/ natural lavender or whatever for bugs & other smells (like plastic wrap), & put it in a closet that isn't close to the smoking. Send the smokers outdoors but that still won't eliminate it all. Store it at someone else's house. Store it at the store you got it from. Don't do mothballs or other chems; they'll just be worse. Hope it helps; research. -- bobbi koch bobbinospam41@comnspcast.net Apr 21 2006

Answer: 15 Stinking Sink Solutions: A friend of mine Tom also has the same problem:
The 15 solutions we came up with to resolve his stinking sink problem were as follows:
1. STOP USING THE SINK AS A URINAL.
2. HAVE THE PLUMBER DISCONNECT THE TOILET BOWL FROM THE SINK SEWER LINE, LET THE WASTE RUN ON THE FLOOR, THIS WAY THE REST OF THE HOUSE WILL SMELL LIKE THE STINKY SINK AND YOU WONT NOTICE IT AS MUCH!
3. TAKE THE DRAIN STOP OUT AND PLACE A FRAGRANCE CANDLE IN THE DRAIN!
4. TRY BRUSHING YOUR TEETH MORE THEN ONCE A WEEK.
5. STOP CLEANING YOUR GOLF BALLS AND SOAKING YOUR SOCKS IN THE SINK.
6. STOP POURING YOUR HOMEMADE SOUP INTO THE SINK.
7. TRY SHAVING USING THE KITCHEN SINK TO SEE IF YOU GET THE SAME SMELL!
8. TRY NOT LET THE WASTE WATER FROM BEHIND YOUR EARS GO DOWN THE SINK, USE PAPER TOWELS.
9. THOSE MICE YOU CAPTURE IN YOUR BEDROOM, (From Bob and Bobs Condo) SHOULD GO OUT WITH THE REGULAR GARBAGE NOT THE WASHED DOWN THE SINK!
10. TRY BUYING THE 90% LEAN BEEF FOR NOW ON!
11. STOP USING THE CHEAPEST COLOGNE, OR ON SALE COLOGNES.
12. THE JUICE OOZING FROM THE OUTSIDE GARBAGE CANS, SHOULD NOT BE COLLECTED AND USED FOR CLEANING THE BATHROOM SINK, TRY SPENDING SOME MONEY ON BLEACH!
13. CUT OUT THE PRUNE JUICE AND DRIED PRUNES FOR A WHILE!
14. START FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS ON THE XLAX AND METAMUCIL!
15. A PROVEN SOLUTION TO GET RID OF THE SMELL, MUST MAKE A 2 LITTER BATCH:
2 Litter Bottle of 100% PROOF Vodka.
20 Fresh Squeezed LIME JUICE.
1/2 Litter of Triple Sec.
Blend with Crushed Ice
Pour 1/2 of the mixture down the bathroom sink. Let Sit for 1/2 hour before using the water.
Consume the other 1/2 of the mixture in less then 10 minutes.
If the sink still stinks you "wont" care!
Repeat Process! Kevin J. Devine kevinnospamjamesdevine1@veriznspon.net 5th Jul 2006Answer: I replied to a question that the woman asked about stinky sinks. I went to www. google.com to ask about getting a grease stain out of carpets and I found your site. Great site! I told the lady that if she puts chicken bones in her disposal and runs it real good that will keep her blades sharp and take a lot of the odors out and then run cut up lemons in the disposal and that the acidity in the lemons will take a lot of the odor out and keep it out. A butcher told me this years ago and it works. Thanks again for this terrific site you have. Nonie Conklin -- nonieanna@bak.rr.com 21 Oct 2002

Question: Mattress Odour Hi there! I recently bought a mattress from the paper and it had never been slept on - in fact it was still in the plastic wrapping. My problem is that it was stored under the seller's house and it must have been musty. The smell has penetrated the fabric of the mattress and nothing that I do will get rid of it. I've tried baking soda twice, two applications of an Australian product called "Febreeze" which is a fabric deodorizer and have also tried carpet deodorizer. The smell has been covered up with more pleasant smells, but still remains. Can you give me any advice to eliminate the musty smell completely. It is an inner-spring Queen mattress covered with a satin quilting. thank you in advance Sara Martin, ruben123@optusnet.com.au (Ref:0380)
Reply: Query# 0380 -- Mildewy odor in mattress I live in a moist, marine-tropical area where mildew and its odor is a constant problem. I've tried and pretty much exhausted any and every remedy but, for deeply-penetrated odors, I've found nothing to contradict the following from a rather authoritative Web site: "If mold is growing deep in the padding of an upholstered piece or in a mattress, nothing will eliminate the mold or odor except renovation by a trained upholsterer or replacement of the item." Like you, any product or method I've tried only covers up or reduces the odor but never completely eliminates it. -- cunamara@globalnet.hn (Cunamara Enterprises) 14 Nov 2002

Answer: If you are using fabric deodorants it is prudent to wait until the spray has dried completely before wearing the garment or using the fabric object, especially pet pillows, as some of these sprays are a bit toxic and have been known to cause illnesses in pets. We have even had a reader say that a friend had lost an expensive parrot through using such a spray. www.qznaz.com

Question: Sewer Drains. Hello, Wondering if you can provide advise/information on how to eliminate the sewer gas smell from our two floor drains in the basement as we recently purchased our 80 year old home and are unfamiliar with the procedure. Is there something we can pour into the drains on a monthly basis to reduce this odor? The house has been remodelled over the past few years and a bathroom was added long after the house was built. The house was built by a builder many years ago and it was my understanding that he intended to someday put in a toilet in the basement so he planned the plumbing system the way it is. I feel that possibly the water level in the drains must stay at a constant level to avoid odours, but not sure of the requirements of doing such. Any assistance or information will be greatly appreciated. Thank You! -- Lacey14K@aol.com (Ref:0177)
Answer#1: Sewer Drains. Hi. I don’t know how long ago you left this message about your 80 yr old home and the basement floor drain or if the problem was fixed, but here goes anyhow.
In order to keep the sewer gasses (including possibly flammable methane) from getting into your house, all waste pipe openings must be preceded by a trap. (also called a “P” trap). This is to keep a level of water to prevent gasses and sometimes sewer pests from getting into your house. In this instance, the toilet assembly actually contains the trap. If the toilet is not there, neither is the trap, so an airtight seal should be placed over the opening. I’ve not looked for one recently but Home Depot or Lowes type stores should be able to help. If a specific cap is not available, heavy plastic and duct tape should do the trick at least temporarily. Answer: Pet Odors: This is for anyone that has a problem with pet stains and odours - even skunk. "Nature's Miracle" is fantastic!! It can be bought at Pet Smart. It is to be used full strength. It's rather expensive, but it does the trick. We have a dog and has been great for the occasional accident so don't know how well it would work on cat pee. But, it did work on removing the skunk odor from our deck and shrubs that got sprayed one night. It's really terrific stuff!! -- Mary Frankenfield

On day two, my husband put the washer and dryer onto the vinyl, and as luck would have it he forgot to hook up the washing machine. Our daughter then went in and started a load of clothes and before we knew it we had about an inch of water sitting on the vinyl and about two feet of our carpet was also soaked.
