A Clean Dishwasher - Mold and Mildew - Stains
Question: Cleaning White Handbell Gloves. I play in a handbell choir. We wear white gloves to protect the bells. The gloves get dirty and we haven't found a way to get them white again. Any suggestions? icwalters@webtv.net (Isabelle Walters) (Ref:0704
Answer: Handbell Gloves. Hi Isabelle, I have been a great fan of powdered Dreft for ages and pretty much use it for an all purpose cleaner; dishes, windows, laundry and floors. It seems to get out soil that does not come out with other products. I recently washed all of the cinches for the deacon robes at our church in my front loader with Dreft, extended cycle and extra water. The person in charge said they have never looked so good! Also try presoaking your handbell gloves in Oxyclean. Best wishes, Sandi - Tucson, AZ -- Sandi Putnam. 7/08/08
Answer: Cleaning Gloves. If you still need help, try Goop hand cleaner. Buy it in the car cleaning products section of any home store, like Walmart, Kmart, etc. Don’t wet the gloves. Just rub the Goop into the stain. Let that sit for 15 minutes and throw in the wash. It works on virtually any clothing stain I have except permanent marker. Kelley -- Kelley McHenry. 26/11/08

Question: Cleaning Dilemma Do you have any advice on how to clean mold and mildew from kids bath toys? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you! sbaadams@earthlink.net (Ref:0658)
Answer: Mold/mildew on children's bath toys After researching the mold/mildew issue for some time in an effort to avoid using chlorine bleach (for environmental reasons), I've concluded that the only answer to mold/mildew is bleach. Chlorine bleach is sure-fire; hydrogen peroxide might work if it's high-strength. I'd soak the toys in a bleach solution for as long as it takes to get rid of the mold/mildew. (You may need to use an old toothbrush to get into crevices.) Then I'd rinse the bath toys carefully, and air them in the sun, before giving them back to the children.
As a person who makes natural-cleaning products told me, "Bleach is to be avoided when possible, but mold/mildew is also bad [for people]. At least the chlorine bleach doesn't persist in the environment." -- Judy Steele 03 Aug 2002

Question: Restoring a Brick Fireplace We have a very attractive brick fireplace. However, the outer hearth is dull from years of dust and soot build-up. Ordinary household cleaners leave the brick surface dull looking. Is there a solution (other than sand blasting) to ? I have heard rumors of an acid wash treatment, but no details. Thank you. -- Wayne G Orr waynor@earthlink.net (Ref:0109)

Question: Smelly Musical Instrument Case My son recently purchased a used musical instrument which is in great shape, but the case smells of mildew. The interior of the case is thickly padded. Is there any way I can safely deodorize it? Thanks so much! -- fscott@home.com (Ref:0110)
Answer Ref: (0110) Musty Instrument cases: Damp Rid is wonderful for removing must. Damp Rid is designed to be used in the container it comes in, but this may be too big for the instrument case--you may have to improvise. Once you've shut the Damp Rid in the case, you should probably leave it there undisturbed for several weeks. If you open the case to take a peek to see how it's working, you will allow the case to fill back up with humid air & the Damp Rid will have to pull all of that new moisture out of the air. Be careful not to bump the case--as the Damp Rid absorbs moisture out of the air, it dissolves, leaving an orange liquid in the container -- Jeanne chadnospam@alanspweb.com
