Question: INK ON ACTION MAN  My son decided he would 'tattoo' his action man with a ball-point pen. Now he wants the scribble removed. Suggestions greatly appreciated. John john@toomey99.freeserve.co.uk  (Ref:0551)

Answer#1: Ball Point Pen Removal
Try using aerosol hair spray applied directly to the stain. ( I usually isolate the stain with an old cloth) spray it, leave it overnite and launder as normal. Good Luck! The cheaper the hairspray the better. jlangelaan1@cognspeco.ca 21/07/2005

Answer#2: Ink Removal. Hi, Try spraying him (the action figure) with hairspray, then scrubbing him with an old toothbrush. rinse under water, and repeat if necessary. -- tracynospam.shaw@calgarynsphealthregion.ca 06/09/2005 (Ref:1182)

Answer#3: Removing Ball Point Pen from Plastic Toys. Dear John, My daughter had a very expensive baby doll once that she scribbled all over in ball point pen. Nothing worked but after many phone calls to the manufacturer, one very kind employee rang me back with this tip. I didn’t actually believe that it would work, but it did in fact completely remove the ball point pen from the doll. What you need is “Oxy 10” pimple cream (I live in Australia so I don’t know what the equivalent outside Australia would be – some kind of 10 X strength pimple cream from the pharmacy I guess). You then rub this cream all over the toy/doll and let it dry. Then coat it again in the cream and put it out in the sun. The pen should just vanish. As I said, it worked for me but you might want to try a small area first.  I also used it when my daughter scribbled all over the plastic cover of a school book and it worked as well. Best of luck. -- Karen  knospamb@rtmnsp.com.au  01/11/2 005

Question: Iron query. I was trying to find the best way to clean the outside part of the iron that is, the part that actually heats up and irons the clothes. It seems to have spray starch build-up. thanks, -- dye. Galloway@gte.net (Ref:0195)

Answer#1: Iron Gunk Remover Tip --   I'm not sure where your from but in the US, WalMart stores now carry a product that removed the stuff from the underside of the iron.  The come in small 1 ½" to 2" tubes.  You heat the iron, put the stuff on the hot iron, wipe away stinky stuff (for me its stitch witchery since I quit using it) with a cotton cloth that can handle the heat.  Then when it cools down, I use a soap/water rag to clean it again.  This product at Walmart is usually where they sell the tub hangers and there are two tubes per package for less than $2. Also, peanut butter will remove gum.  It dissolves it.  I managed to fall asleep when little and my mom/grandma used it to get the gum out of my hair without the need for a buzz job hair cut! Cathi Catherine Banks cnspbanks@tceq.state.tx.us 14 Oct 2003

Answer#2: Iron Residue. I just had this problem w/a brownish residue. I tried polish remover, Avon

Question: Hot pan on Oak Table Help!!! I put a hot pan on my oak dining table, and I need to know how to remove it. Can anyone help me? Thanks. -- leydig@adelphia.net  (Sherry Leydig)  (Ref:0569)

Answer#1: (Ref:0569) Hot pan on Oak Table reply  You need to remove the black scorch mark, then re-colour the wood if it's stained. Try sanding the area very lightly with a very fine sandpaper. You can purchase a crayon-like colouring stick from some furniture stores. Sand an inconspicuous area first and try shoe nugget or coloured wax to put back the wood colour before trying it on the table top. Another tip is cigarette ash rubbed on with a soft cloth in a circular motion. I've never tried that one myself, but it's an old "Wives Tale" remedy. Has to be only a light scorch though. -- Kirsty Brown orgnspaniser@paradise.net.nz

Answer#2: Hot Pan on Table. Try mayonnaise; something about the oil helps raise stains. Then you may have to sand and refinish, as the other person said (sorry!) --  Lauren Matheson  matnospam@uninspmelb.edu.au Feb 13 2006

Question: Burn mark how can i remove a burnt mark on a blouse -- trish22lax@hotmail.com 5 Nov 2003  (Ref:0945)

Answer: Burn Mark: I'm known as someone who can fix anything, but, there are limits. If some spot is unfixable, I use iron on patches. Cut the burnt place out, cut a patch from someplace & put the patch around the patch & Viola! it's gone. Depends on the place, of course, the fabric. Can you sew it into a dart or a seam? Can you put a decorative patch on the area? See it as a challenge. Can the area be cut off & made into a shorter garment, or have shorter sleeves. Hope this gives you some imaginative ideas. b -- bobbi koch   bobbinospam41@comnspcast.net Apr 21 2006

Answer: Burn Stains. Light burn marks can be removed by placing a dampened cloth with vinegar over the stain. Iron with hottest setting possible for the fabric. For white cotton, cover the stain with a dampened cloth of a water/peroxide solution and press a hot iron over the cloth. -- Clara' saxnosppon@fronspntiernet.net Sep 10 2006

Question: Wedding Dress I recently purchased a wedding gown for my daughters wedding in October of 2001. I must store in my home until it is time for the alterations, which is 3 months prior to the wedding. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the dress, bead work and lace from yellowing? The dress is made of 100% polyester. Also, there are smokers in the house, and how do we prevent any smoke odors from absorbing into the gown? Thank you, Devittph@aol.com  (Ref:0026)

Answer: Smoking and Wedding Dresses : Do you have a place that is pretty airtight or away from the house? Wrap the dress to airtightness w/ natural lavender or whatever for bugs & other smells (like plastic wrap), & put it in a closet that isn't close to the smoking. Send the smokers outdoors but that still won't eliminate it all. Store it at someone else's house. Store it at the store you got it from. Don't do mothballs or other chems; they'll just be worse. Question: Rust stains in white cotton: What will remove rust from white cotton material? -- Lorrie Nold -- loirv@ccp.com  (Ref:0712)

Answer: Rust stains in white cotton: To remove the stain, rub with lemon juice and salt. Leave it several hours. It's even more effective when placed in the sun. Wash as normal. - - Patti kpmnospam@wtnsp.net  Seizetheday

In Australia we have a product called Rustiban available at pharmacies only. It's a tiny plastic bottle with liquid in it of which one only needs a drop or two onto the cloth which has been moistened with water. Rust spots disappear while you watch. I t works wonderfully. Only on white cotton as far as I know. Don't get it on your fingers or skin as it is corrosive --maroofnsp@globalnsp.net.au

I believe that there is also a stain Devil available for rust on fabric.  Oxalic acid is sometimes suggested in old books on stain removal, however it is poisonous and should only be used with caution. -- www.qznaz.com

Answer: Stain Devils  Hi, I notice in the how to remove stains section, someone recommended "Stain Devil" and implied that it was not readily available, except in the UK. If you ask your search engine to find "Westons", they are a pharmaceutical supply company that advertise on the web, and have "Stain Devils" for all manner of stains. P.J.Morant. --  17 Jan 2003

Answer: Rust Stains : Go to your local grocery or wal-mart and purchase a bottle of "Whink". It is a copper colored bottle with white lettering. This is my Miracle stuff for all rust stains on any material. You just squirt the whink directly on the stain, and the rust spot dissapears instantly. If it doesn't, it isn't rust. I even use it on the kitchen counters when a rust stain forms from a metal can being placed for a time with moisture under it. Hope this helps. -- dbschoe October 1 2006

Question: Mildew Smell. We recently had carpet and vinyl installed in two new rooms. On day two, my husband put the washer and dryer onto the vinyl, and as luck would have it he forgot to hook up the washing machine. Our daughter then went in and started a load of clothes and before we knew it we had about an inch of water sitting on the vinyl and about two feet of our carpet was also soaked. We used a dry vac to clean up as much water as possible from the carpet, but now a week later we still have a mildew smell in the room. My question is, "How can I get that mildew smell out of the carpet?" It is driving me crazy, because now if we leave the door to the room open it affects the rest of the house! The label says "dry clean only." Does anyone know if their is any way to undo the shrinkage and return the sweater to its original shape? I would appreciate any help. JULY2383@aol.com (Ref:0359)

Answer: How to Un-shrink a wool sweater ... Hi – I was trying to figure out how to make a sweater smaller and came across this article on un-shrinking…http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Un-shrink-A-Wool-Sweater&id=9105 -- Michelle. 'Dave & Michelle' Sep 24 2006

Answer: Shrunken Sweater. Sometimes it happens to us all, in a careless moment we throw our brand new Aran sweater in the washing machine or dryer, shrinking them down about eight sizes and rendering it un-wearable to all but our children’s action man or Barbie Doll.

Luckily I have a contact with some inside knowledge on this matter so I asked my friend Mark Shenton owner of www.woolovers.com if there was a way to un-shrink a wool sweater, he started laughing even before I could finish my question.

Well people, today’s your lucky day, I have used the information this Shenton character gave me and I have now mastered the black art of wool un-shrinking and am here to share it with you.

Here we go….
When wool gets wet and warm, the fibres in the wool lock themselves together and don't want to let go, resulting in shrinkage (you can get wool warm or wet, but not both), which kind of makes washing wool garments a dangerous business.
To un-shrink the wool, soak the garment in warm water with a mild wool friendly soap for about 10 minutes. This unlocks the fibres in the wool. Then lay the garment out on some towels in a cool place. Stretch the garment out to its original dimensions. The stretching pulls the unlocked wool fibres away from each other. Once this is done relax and allow your wool garment to dry. The absence of heat from the drying process allows the wool fibres to set in place without locking together and shrinking the garment again.

That it, long story short: you will have a good as brand new, fully functional sweater again. Take Care, Al -- Scannospamlan22@anosppol.com. Nov 18 2006

Answer: We did a search for that odd word Stwizler on the internet but no success. The food dye must be a common one so it should be relatively easy to find a stain remover that does the trick. We are still asking around for you. If you can find out the name of the product a search on the web might get a response from the manufacturer of the candy -- www.qznaz.com

Answer: Red Candy Stain. I think your problem is that the candy is spelled: TWIZZLER—no S. Good luck -- 'gurowitz' . Dec 15 2006

Answer Stwizler. I have had considerable success with Borax to take stains out of carpet. First dampen the area with warm vinegar in water (just a dash in a icecream dish half full of water). Then sprinkle the powdered borax over the area quite liberally. (I make a point of bying Borax that looks like talc in texture as there is also one which looks like dry fibeglass type slivers and I don't like that one). Leave the mix to dry and the stain just comes to the surface of the borax powder. Quite magic. Vacuum when dry. JM

Question: Is a Solar Keratosis a Cancer Proper or is it a pre-cancerous phenomenon, and can I ignore it as my doctor suggests? Karen Shipley kship1185@aolp.com April 29 2007

Answer: Solar keratosis fulfils criteria clinically, histopathologically and biologically for malignancy, i.e. SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma), as do the other cutaneous types of superficial SCCs, namely, arsenical keratosis, radiation keratosis and Bowen's disease; each of them, in time and without therapeutic intercession, has the capability to kill either by destruction of tissue locally or by metastasis widely. Question: Removing water stains on varnish. I have tried to find out how to remove a water stain from a varnished table. I AM BEGINNING TO DESPAIR. Does anyone know how to remove a water stain from a varnished table. PPPPLLLLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSSEEEE. -- di@arnotec.co.uk 13 May 2004 (Ref:1044)

Answer: Water Stains on Varnish. I first put a little tooth paste on a damp washcloth and rub around the water stain in a circular motion. The paste is slightly abrasive and will raise the grain to blend in the stain, a little bit. Then, wipe it with a clean damp cloth and dry. Lastly try rubbing a walnut across the stain, letting the oils from the walnut soak into the wood. It works great to hide scratches and other damage. For very bleached out stains, I use Old English furniture treatment. It helps to put a darker tint back into the wood. Hope this helps. -- 'Christa Rutelonis' Aug 12 2007

Question: Melted carpet When attempting to remove wax from our carpet by ironing over greaseproof paper we somehow managed to melt our carpet! We are in rented accommodation and we need a way to minimise the damage. Can anyone help?! -- "Dunne, Nick" ndunne@westminster.gov.uk (Ref:0303)

Response#1 Melted Carpet: Hi , Ive done exactly the same as you, I think. Im left with a very hard dark patch on the carpet. Did you get any tips, and did it work???? Sue 20 March 2007 Reply

Reply#1 Melted Carpet: Blimey this was a long time ago! No we essentially melted the carpet and there was no way back from there. If you've done the same then you'll either have to ignore it or the carpet will have to be replaced. We were renting at the time and had to claim back on insurance once we knew the landlord wanted to replace the carpet. Nick 'Dunne, Nick' Mar 20 2007

Reply#2: Repairing Carpet. Your question wasn't dated, so hope this reaches you in time.

For any damage to carpet, go to a clothes closet, or an inconspicuous place and cut a patch to fit the damaged spot. Cut it slightly larger so you can trim and fit it in. The fibers should blend in fine once you glue it down. There is a right way and wrong to laying carpet, so be sure and turn the patch so the fibers lean in the same direction. Don't know how to explain this exactly, but think you will get the idea.

I've used this method before on burned spots and it worked fine. Use a good glue. Good luck. -- 'Sade' . Nov 8 2007

Question Nicotine  Stains  Does anyone know how to remove nicotine stains from cloth curtains? --Val  "Val Robinson" (Ref:0143) vrobinson@beckpowell.com

Answer: Stain on Curtains. I use ammonia on every thing that is yellow. I pour straight on, will not bleach colors, then wash in machine. I mix 2oz in 16oz bottle and clean everything that will not go into washer. We are smokers and it works great for that yellow closet stain across the hangers, pour on straight. Hope this helps.
