Question: How to bring a 'sit down' shower into the 21st century!
Hello, my name is Tracy and and I'm renting a room in a house in Ireland. My problem is: The bathroom has what I'd call a sit-down shower, originally there was no shower, just a tub but now there is a nice set-up of a rubber hose which has ends which connect to each of the faucets (hot and cold) and then they connect to a long rubber tube that has the showerhead on the end of it. If you lift the shower- head above your head you can see where once there was a fixture which held it at just the right height so that it would be a great, normal, stand-up shower, however, for whatever reason this is now non-existent. This fixture was stuck onto the plastic covering for a vent. So my challenge is, how to get it to be a stand up shower again, there needs to be something to hold the shower head up, and if it needs to be stuck to the wall, it's going to have to hang onto the plastic vent covering. Help!!! Any ideas?? -- tracy.gauwitz@ireland.com (Ref:0368)

Answer: four alternatives for you Tracy !
1 see if your Landlord will supply a new shower, usually the lease requires the landlord to maintain or repair the dwelling in a suitable manner.
2. ok he won't ?! The attachment is replaceable at your nearest hardware store at a modest price
3. cant afford that ? very well how about buying a plastic hook at the store that has double sided adhesive on the back sticks to most smooth surfaces ( don't put weight on it for 24 hrs though )
4. desperate? ok get a wire coat hanger ! hook the hook end through the vent, then stretch the rest down wards, wrap in a spiral around the shower head so it holds the hose without kinking it costs nothing !
5. oh if all else fails EMIGRATE! -- REDI weenspwalla@dingonspblue.net.au

Reply from Author : Thank you! Thank you! Will definitely try a couple of the options you've sent! I am definitely not emigrating! Life is fabulous here even with the shower in the condition it's in! Tracy -- tracy.gauwitz@ireland.com

Question: Disintegrating Screws hello the screws are so bad that if you try to unwind the head it just falls to bits, it's too soft. Is there any other way e.g. heat, drilling, it's a piece for a motorbike by the way -- NickSinden@aol.com (Ref:0369)

Answer: It is possible to drill the screws out but it is a delicate job and if your bike is expensive I would seek expert assistance. The drill has to be central, aligned with the screw and I suggest that the job is done in several stages, i.e. start with a small drill and work up to one that is slightly less than the inner dimension of the thread. If it is a blind hole then the job is just that much harder --  Martin Klystron

Answer: Question: Ref: 0399 This is for anyone that has a problem with pet stains and odors - even skunk. "Nature's Miracle" is fantastic!! It can be bought at Pet Smart. It is to be used full strength. It's rather expensive, but it does the trick. We have a dog and has been great for the occasional accident so don't know how well it would work on cat pee. But, it did work on removing the skunk odor from our deck and shrubs that got sprayed one night. It's really terrific stuff!! -- Mary Frankenfield mhnspfrank@earthlink.net

Question: Water Hammer. I have bought a kit for fixing water hammer but am unsure at what point in the system I should attach it. The salesman told me to connect it to the highest point I could access. Answer: You should have a tank in your loft or garage. We think he means as close to the tank as possible -- qznaz

Answer: Water Hammer.  Having read one of your tips on preventing water hammer of which the cause is usually a worn ball valve in cold water storage tank, the resultant hammering is caused by unsupported pipe work (cold feed) next to the storage tank. Usually the plumber can’t be bothered to do the job properly but a couple of 15mm pipe clips attached to suitable battens placed near the tank will stop the hammer. Additionally a new ball valve assy, make sure the rising main to tank is turned off first before changing ball valve. Regards  peter wells13@ntlnspworld.com    29 Oct 2005
